Cat Portraits

Since taking an interest in photography in the late 90’s, I’ve had my work published in several coffee table books and shown in galleries around the world.

I came across the book: Walter Chandoha: The Cat Photographer (Aperture). On the cover there were pillows stacked up and on the top was a white Persian kitty. I appreciated that the photos were bright and didn’t look like the cat photos you see all over social media. You can tell by the photos Chandoha loves these cats and that’s why I responded to the work.

I started photographing the family cat “Kitty” several years ago, using backdrops set up from previous shoots. I was happy to see she was fairly cooperative and I was able to get some good photos. Eventually, I set up with a look for her in mind, shooting our holiday card photos and enjoying the work it took to get a good photo of our cat.

I decided to start taking portraits of other people’s cats too. I figured out lighting that made the cats stand out and the colors pop. Cats do what they want and not every shoot is a success.

Most of the shoots I do I get the shots I envisioned. Cat photos are not a one person job and I’m lucky to have an assistant that’s great with cats.

Sometimes it takes a little while for the cats to get acclimated and I’ll need your help getting your cat to look at me while I’m taking the photos.
